Futuristic United Nations Security Council

The security council is one of the main bodies of the United Nations and was established in 1945 alongside the other main bodies. The council operates under the UN’s charter. It’s Powers and functions are:

  • To maintain international security in accordance with the United Nations principles

  • To recommend methods of adjustment for international disputes

  • to exercise the trusteeship functions of the United Nations in “strategic areas”

  • to recommend the admission of new Members

  • to take military action against an aggressor to the international peace and security

  • to determine the existence of a threat to the peace and security or act of aggression and to recommend what action should be taken

  • to take military action against an aggressor

Due to the council’s special position within the United Nations, While other organs of the United Nations make recommendations to member states, only the Security Council has the power to make decisions that member states are then obligated to implement under the Charter.

In Y-MUN’19 the delegates will try to establish peace and security in the Congo region via the Security Council’s power of mandate. The council will face numerous challenges with intertwining conflicts between the nations, humanitarian crises, ethnic cleansings and much more while a violent ethnic-based conflict erupts within the area.
